If sunflowers had teeth…

…then this one could have bitten my head off!

I’ve read Day of the Triffids by John Wyndam and watched the BBC adaptation and it’s enough to know that I’m glad plants can’t walk (notable exception: walking onion!) and most of them are not carnivorous.

Sunflowers may be one of the most anthropomorphized plants out there, a close second being tomatoes, but fortunately sunflowers are always portrayed as friendly heliotropic things that embrace happiness and well being…

I tried not to get too caught up in the personification of these magnificent plants and was largely able to ignore their voices in my head.

Sunflowers: are you really going to leave us out here to go brown and die.

Me: sunflowers are not telepathic.

Sunflowers: ok, so now we are dead-petalled and brown, please don’t chop off our heliotropic heads.

Me: lahdeedahdeedah.

Sunflowers: each of those seeds is a child of mine.

Me [whilst tearing at my ears]: leave me alone!

Carnivorous Sunflowers

Mammoth Grey Striped Sunflower from Sow True Seed 003
There is no denying that these sunflowers were huge, really living up to their variety: Mammoth Grey Striped Sunflower. I actually got these seeds from a free packet given out by Sow True Seed at Earth Day back in Spring. That means the seeds are non-GMO, non-Hybrid and therefore unlikely to mutate into carnivorous, walking, lunartropic, human-hunting monsters.

NOTE: I’m not the only one to consider this possibility:

Carnivorous Sunflowers

In this pre-Apocalyptic world I feel as if it’s eat or be eaten. I’m still making plans, but I’m thinking sunflower seed butter and roasted sunflowers seem like the easiest ways to eat these sunflower babies before they can spawn, mutate and take over the Earth.

Wish me luck!
